A jump start is the easiest call we take and the one most likely to be a waste of your money if it stops there.
Here is why. A car that will not start has a short list of usual causes, and the battery is only one of them. If the battery is simply flat — lights left on, short trips, cold snap — a jump and a decent drive may genuinely be the end of it. If the alternator is not charging, the jump works beautifully, you drive away delighted, and the car dies again somewhere less convenient a few miles later, now with no way to restart it.
So the jump is not the job. The test after the jump is the job.

Questions people actually ask
My car started fine with a jump. Am I OK to drive?
Maybe, and the honest answer depends on the charging test. If the alternator is charging, a decent run will put charge back in. If it is not, you are running on a battery that nothing is refilling, and the vehicle will stop again — possibly with the power steering and brakes assist going first. Get it tested before you rely on it for a long trip.
Can I jump it myself?
Often, and there is no shame in it. Two cautions worth taking seriously: get the polarity right, because reversed leads can do expensive damage to modern electronics, and be careful in live traffic — most jump-start injuries have nothing to do with the battery and everything to do with where the person was standing.
How do I know whether it is the battery or the alternator?
There are decent clues — dimming lights while driving, a battery warning light, dying shortly after a successful jump — but clues are not a test. We wrote a full guide on telling them apart.
